Evanescence - Fallen (2003)

Producer: Dave Fortman

Evanescence are a nu-metal band from Arkansas with gothic overtones. Yes, crunchy power chords and heavy rock beats create that familiar wall of sound, though spiced up with turn-table scratches and synth embellishments. The vocals of Amy Lee make Evanescence stand out from a scene swamped with similar-sounding groups. CoverThey are closer to the operatic metal of Tristania than Linkin Park. And I love their video clips!

The single 'Bring Me to Life' went to number one in Australia, and it is arguably the best track on the album. Amy Lee's vocal style is strong yet mournful; she sounds quite different from any of the gyrating pop divas currently stripping off in their videos. The remaining 10 songs consist of two ballads and eight gutsy renditions that deserve generous amplification. The thoughtful lyrics touch upon a range of subjects: love found, love lost, deceit, torment. This is important given the almost repetitive guitar riffing of Ben Moody.

Fallen is an excellent debut album that shows much promise for Evanescence. As with all nu-metal music, hardened metal fans may find the guitar work lacking, even though there is some serious crunch here. After touring to promote these songs, the band should be ready to produce something less accessible and more textured. Until then, Fallen will continue to be the soundtrack for my breakfast time rituals – bringing me back to life every morning.
