In the Realm of the Senses (1976)

Director: Nagisa Oshima (Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence)

Based on a true event from 1936, In the Realm of the Senses paints a picture of lust and obsession that has no equal in Western cinema. To be blunt, the narrative mostly consists of a string of sex scenes which become more 'experimental' as the characters pass from infatuation to love, and finally to the edge of sanity, where the concept of possession takes on a whole new meaning.

Even though the sex is incessant and moderately explicit, this movie has more of an art house sensibility than a pornographic one. In the Realm of the Senses is only one film in Oshima's long, celebrated career as a filmmaker.
