A Bullet in the Arse (2003)

Directors:  David Richardson, Paul Moder, Robin Brennan

As mentioned by the filmmakers at the world premier in Melbourne at MUFF and on their website, A Bullet in the Arse is a no-budget tribute of sorts to Sergio Leone and various other action movie staples.

It is told like a modern fable, with an assemblage of underworld figures such as hitmen, crime bosses, and brothel owners all out for each other's blood. This results in a series of stylised gun battles that increase in ferocity and carnage as the inevitable showdown approaches.

As much fun as A Bullet in the Arse is, it must be remembered that the project took seven years to shoot and two years to edit, so the high-gloss production values of something like Thou Shalt Not Kill...Except(1985) cannot be expected, but having said that, A Bullet in the Arse is by no means a lazily made borefest, either. Given the meagre resources at hand, it is clear that the main filmmakers (Paul Moder, Robin Brennan and David Richardson) went all-out to both assault the audience with everything they had, and to make a picture they would enjoy watching themselves.

Although A Bullet in the Arse is more inspired than inspiring, the film is undeniably entertaining, which is an achievement in itself.
