Dawn of the Dead (2003)

Cut Footage	It reportedly contains nine minutes of additional narrative footage and extra gore. The theatrical version, which was rated MA in Australia and R in the US, has several bloody and gory moments but is definitely missing key scenes and character development. Despite the plentiful though very mainstream gore content, there are no stand-out gore effects. It certainly fails to make the same visceral impact that George Romero's original classic does, with its dozens of zombie headshots and intestine-laden chowdowns. What happened to this 2003 remake shows what probably would have happened to the 1978 version if it was locked in to a US R rating theatrically.    Ironically, the gorier version received the same classification as the censored released. Wake up, major studios.

Comments	The Australian DVD (Columbia Tristar) runs to 87:50 PAL (87:56 DVD counter time) or 91:30 film or 91:35 NTSC, while the VHS rental runs to 85:11 PAL (including the Columbia opening, which is missing on the DVD), a difference of 2:39 PAL. Another VHS release apparently runs to 88:12 PAL. I will follow this up and confirm the running time of the Columbia VHS rental. Our DVD has the same specifications as the European region 2 DVD.
Cut Footage	The Australian VHS rental (RCA/Columbia/Hoyts) contains the following cuts compared to the local DVD. Time references are from the DVD.    (a) 9:35 - A shot of Rosaria's panties are pulled down all the way by a thug, who then puts his hands on her backside.    (b) 9:56 - The thug licks her bum.    (c) 10:32 - Rosaria is taken from behind by the thug, who makes exaggerated thrusting movements, even to the extent of causing his bandana to fall off.    (d) 11:26 - After Rosaria is thrown onto the bed and has her dress ripped up the back, there are additional shots of her top coming off, exposing her breasts, then a shot of her struggling naked with a thug who climbs onto of her and starts humping.    (e) 11:51 - A second thug climbs on top of her as she is hit with a leather belt by another thug. He thrusts into her from behind as they lay on the bed. She is struck several more times with the belt.    (f) 12:15 - The thugs turn her over and the thug played by Lawrence Fishburn starts thrusting into her near the side of the bed. There is a close up of her agonized face.    (g) 12:41 - Rosaria is pulled by the hair along the floor toward the leader and has her face shoved into his crotch after he pulls his pants down over his buttocks.    (h) 13:51 - Rosaria is hit in the mouth with a crowbar. The first impact shot is the same as the tape, but there are two additional shots, one showing her falling toward camera, then another as she falls to the floor, starts to get back up again, looks behind her, and finally looses consciousness.    (i) 14:40 - The shot of Rosaria lying nude, presumably dead, is cropped so that everything below her waist is hidden. On the DVD, you see her whole body.    (j) 15:36 to 17:15 (99 seconds) - The rape of Paul Kersey's daughter is almost entirely missing on the VHS tape. There is a wide shot of the girl with a thug's hands on her legs. All footage from this point on is cut, including the removal of her bra, the fondling of her breasts, and her quiet rape when she lies mute as the thug thrusts into her. The tape picks things up again as he climbs off her body.    (k) 17:29 - The moment when he dismounts, right after his orgasm, is prolonged by a few seconds on the DVD.    The first rape sequence involves alternate editing choices in order to make the cut shots flow together more smoothly. The scene where the daughter jumps to her death is identical frame-for-frame in both versions. When she hits the fence, blood pours from her mouth - according to IMDB, this was one of the shots cut from the US version to gain an R rating. Which means that this DVD appears to be the fully uncut international version. The rest of the violence in the VHS rental tape matches the DVD.

It also has making Of featurette and two documentaries about Ed Gein on it plus several trailers and a nice 28 page booklet which is in German but has also nice pics. It is available at amazon.de for the price of 12.97 EURO which would be about 15 $US. Anyone who is a fan of this film and has a region code free DVD player should try to get it. Comments	"Passed uncut for theatrical/drive-in release in Australia back in the seventies with an M rating! However, the version released uncut locally was AIP's R-rated theatrical print, which had a brief sequence where Roberts Blossom undergoes a little home embalming removed prior to submission to the MPAA. This short sequence turned up restored in Exploited's UK VHS version, which had a sequence where Blossom dresses a female corpse like a deer at the finale modified due to the presence of one of the BBFC's favourite bug-bears – blood on bare breasts. Comments	"The film was released in 1971 in the US with an X rating, but pressure for a wider audience eventually saw Warner Brothers succumb to inflicting edits to gain an all important R rating. The film was reduced in duration from 112 mins to 108 mins. Australian theatrical prints were originally of the longer 112 min version, and carried an R rating. The video version released locally was the R rated US version, which had been modified sufficiently enough to warrant an M classification. The British re-release VHS version was restored to close on the original 112 min length, reinstating so much footage it's just not funny how differently the film plays (some scenes were reframed in the US version to either obscure full-frontal nudity, or obscure nudity completely). And yes, sources in the UK and Europe advise me that the newly found footage will make its way into Warner's R2 DVD release. However, there is a good chance that the full 'rape of Christ' sequence will not be restored, as it will undoubtedly fall under the 'blasphemy' rulings as set out by the BBFC. That said, the up coming R2 DVD will come as close as is possible to Russell's original vision of the film, before seventies censors put paid to his ideals. Comments	The BBFC lists the theatrical running time at 109:00 exactly, matching the Australian censor's own determination of the running time. On DVD locally the director's cut was released on DVD (Hoyts) with a running time of 106:19 PAL. The BBFC classified it twice for home video, once at 106:17 PAL (obviously the director's cut) and later at 104:06 PAL, making the latter version the censored theatrical edition.

Comments	Two versions have been classified M by the OFLC. The first was the censored theatrical version I saw at the cinema. It runs to 128:37 film according to BBFC records. This equates to 123:28 PAL and 128:45 NTSC. The second version they classified a few months later for DVD is called the "Uncut Version" locally and the "Ultimate Action Edition" (a somewhat more bombastic title) in the UK. Strangely, according to DVD Compare, the US and Japanese HD BluRay releases put out so far are of the censored PG-13 version, not the US unrated version. This compromised version appears to be the one destined for BluRay disc in Australia too, according to the OFLC's database. This news will not please HD adopters.
Cut Footage	Additional details are forthcoming when I can take a look at the extended cut. Basically there are bloodier bullets hits and more profanity in the unrated version. Most tellingly, John McClane's signature line "Yippee-kay-aye, motherfucker" is no longer masked by a gunshot sound effect.

Cut Footage	(a) A shot of a man hanging upside down, bleeding into an open casket with his throat slashed. This shot occurs at 43:42 on the local Warner DVD. There are three shots of blood dribbling into Dracula's coffin. (b) The staking of Barbara Shelley as a vampire. On the local DVD the shot of the stake causing blood to well up around the wound runs for 66 frames from 75:39.    Also note that a small white oval that appears on frame 21 on the US DVD does not appear on the PAL DVD, meaning each transfer used a different source print. The PAL DVD looks brighter and more colourful than the US disc, which is spoiled by a dark band on the left quarter of the 2.35:1 frame.    The local DVD contains exactly the same shots of both cut scenes as the US DVD from Anchor Bay, which does not have a time code, so no accurate running time is available for that release yet.

Comments	"Chinatown Cinemas submitted this one for classification back in 1992 and promptly had the film refused classification. After a staggering 8 mins were cut from the film, it was passed with an R rating. The uncut Hong Kong theatrical print (which was shorn of 15 secs for cinema exhibition) runs 89 mins; the OFLC approved version runs 81 mins. Chinatown Cinemas chose to run a slightly edited print instead, which ran 86 mins and only deleted the 'punch lines' from the horror sequences, obviously without the OFLC's blessing. Rumours about 11 mins of cuts to film are simply that…rumours and nothing less. All evidence points towards the original film elements having long since been destroyed, thus it is unlikely that a completely uncut version will ever surface.
