The British film print runs to 91:27.    (a) There's an alternate take of Willie leaving the mall at the start of the movie with a more vulgar exchange with the security guard.    (b) There's a whole new subplot at the beginning of the movie with Willie stealing a car and robbing someone's house, and then going to a strip club and bringing a stripper home before hearing the phone message telling him it's that time of year again.    (c) There is more footage of Willie having sex in the dressing room.    (d) The pinball scene with the underage girl is extended with more thrusting.    (e) There's more swearing and berating in the food court scene.    (f) There's some more footage of Willie yelling at The Kid after losing a game of checkers.    (g) The jacuzzi sex scene is slightly longer.    (h) The scene with Willie confronting a security guard outside the mall is extended.    (i) A small extension of the Granny Death scene.    (j) An extended car death scene.    (k) A longer shoot out at the mall. Comments	Also banned in the UK, this documentary is just a collection of mondo footage – ostensibly once or almost broadcast on US network TV – showing people being hurt or killed in various accidents. It includes the infamous shot of a girl who is hit by a train when attempting to cross the tracks, her body thrown toward the camera already apparently lifeless.    The would-be local distributor, Zeal Entertainment, has tried to get this title classified twice, and at no small expense given what the OFLC charges per screening. Perhaps they will have better luck with the other entries in this series?

However, both versions are missing the part where Lana Clarkson is nude and being penetrated by the grizzled old alchemist while she is strapped to a slanted board by her wrists. This shot is only in the US unrated VHS release. The US DVD (Concorde) is the cut US R-rated version. The status of the UK DVD (Prism Leisure Corp) is unknown. It runs to 70:28 PAL which equates to 73:24 NTSC.

Cut Footage	One scene has been trimmed involving simulated fellatio with a pistol gun barrel and a topless woman asleep in bed, with blood shooting from the victim's mouth and nostrils after the gun is fired. The blood spray lasts for exactly nine frames. This scene is actually played under the opening credits too, though without the spraying blood.     I have been told that the decapitation was also trimmed on the VHS rental release. On tape the head was apparently never shown rolling across the floor. [confirm]
Reason	Trimmed to allow the release of the movie after being banned. Virtually all versions worldwide were cut. The US version was cut to avoid a US X rating.

Comments	"The sequence, which lasts close on a minute, is pretty much missing from all versions at the moment; even the US VHS editions. Problem is, aside from being banned in its uncut form in Australia, the film is also only permissible in an R-rated edition in the US (it was passed with an R rating after cuts were made to the film following being awarded an X, which Fox could not release the film with, being a major studio). For its VHS re-release in the nineties, under an NC-17, the trims were lightened, but the pistol fellatio sequence was still trimmed (blood spouting from the victim's mouth and nose at the 'climax' of the scene, the gun being fired, were removed; I also believe the sequence was shortened). Ironically, Fox's local initial VHS release (with the original poster artwork and fluoro-pink sleeve) featured a photo from the sequence on the back of the sleeve. Comments	"The initial version that screened Australian cinemas in '92 ran a spectacular 97 min in duration (i.e. it was the shorter American print prepared by Trimark). The successive VHS release through Columbia Tristar was sourced from the longest (104 min) version; this version also surfaced on VHS/DVD in the UK and Spain. The film was, however, never refused classification here to the best of my knowledge, but it was submitted in two different versions. Both versions were slapped with an R rating." [M. C. Braveheart (1996)

Cut Footage	Mel Gibson implemented cuts to remove copious bleeding from sword and axe wounds in the battle scenes to achieve a US R rating. [Melon Farmers]     Although the throat cutting of the English Lord is shown from the front in the local DVD (Fox), the shot cuts away before we see blood dribbling from his fatal neck wound, as shown on the US DVD (Paramount). This brief shot was also removed for the UK release, as Mel Gibson explains on the DVD commentary. From memory, the UK DVD is also missing the initial front view slash, but that has to be confirmed. The reverse angle from behind also shows the entire knife stroke, and would suffice as an alternative take in the UK DVD. Therefore, in Australia we still see the knife slash but without the bloodletting. Click here to see the footage on YouTube.     Gibson also mentions that the disembowelling of William Wallace was trimmed before release: "We used to see it in all its gory detail". It proved too much for some members of test audiences. Gibson does not mention making cuts for the MPAA, only the removal of frames from some impact shots for stylistic reasons. I will endeavour to confirm the MPAA cuts.

One example pointed out in the DVD commentary has moans dubbed over an interior scene where two victims of the Monster lay, apparently wounded. This was done to reduce the body count tally. The victims were actually supposed to be deceased, and the reactions of Minnie and the bystanders indicates this.

The Brood / Chromosome 3 (1980)

Cut Footage	The uncut R1 disc runs to 92:18 NTSC, which calculates out to roughly 88:37 PAL, compared to 87:49 PAL for this new R4 DVD. There is an MGM lion logo and some dead time before the start of the feature running to about 13 secs, and one brief MGM lion logo (one roar) at the end running to about five seconds.    Hence there is a difference of 48 secs between the two DVDs. The French disc, titled Chromosome 3, runs to 87:44 PAL and has no MGM logos at the start or end. The 'birthing' scene on the Dendy French disc is missing one crucial moment, among others: the second foetus licking shot. The first one is shown head-on, while the second is more of a close-up with the camera on Samantha Eggar's left. IMDB reports that all of the European PAL DVDs are cut. Unfortunately, this new Region 4 PAL release by MGM is also similarly cut.    As mentioned above, the old Australian VHS rental is missing even more footage than the censored US R version. The only uncut version available on DVD is still the current R1 MGM unrated release.

Comments	"The film was distributed by Sony Pictures Classics in the US (the same company who distributed your beloved Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon), who cut the film for a US R-rating. If the Australian release version carried the Sony logo at its header theatrically, then yes, we have the same digitally cleaned up version that the US was lumbered with. Blood-splashes, bullet hits, and so on were 'tidied up' and somewhat reduced in impact by digital removal. The only sure-fire way to be certain of which version we have in Oz, is check the Yakuza member suicide where he shoots himself in the head. If there is an enormous splash of blood behind him on the wall, the film is uncut, if not...Sony have had their CGI tools at work." [M. C. Thomason]

Cut Footage	Our Roadshow-Premier VHS tape runs for 90:06 PAL. The uncut US VHS (Republic Pictures Home Video) tape runs for 94:32 NTSC, making it the equivalent of 93:51 PAL. Therefore, the calculated difference in running times favours the longer US tape by approximately 41 seconds. Here is a breakdown of the main violent moments:    (a) The opening sequence where a man is nailed to a cross is trimmed of hammer blows, and perhaps a pistol shot into the victim's mouth. The uncut tape shows a nail being hammered into Cody's left wrist. He then pulls his wrist free by sliding it over the nail.    (b) An attempted rape and assault occurs 24 minutes in. It seems to be edited to reduce the overall impact of the scene, although I doubt much if any nudity would have been shown. The uncut US tape shows Joey being forced to rape Stevie, although his brother intervenes before it can go futher.    (c) Throat slashing at 33:10. On the US tape, a very brief shot of the slashing is shown, together with a blood spray which gets Dallas in the face, but the whole sequence is very fast.    (d) The badger hand mauling scene at 46:00 looks trimmed. The US tape shows three close-ups of the badger biting Joey's hand, until he finally stabs it in the head with a knife.    (e) A handing stabbing at 58:13 looks to be missing the impact shot. The lead up to the imminent rape just before this part is also a bit choppy. In the US tape, Stevie's top and panties are cut off and the sequence runs for longer. The hand stabbing is shown in two shots, the initial impact and a reveal that pans down from Caleb's arm down to his hand stuck to the table top.    (f) The demise of one thug via helicopter rotor blade shows no gore, apart from blood splashing onto the helicopter, in both versions.    (g) The pistol shot into a mouth is bloodless in both versions.

Reason	Most masters are of the non-director's cut version.
Uncut Releases	A French laserdisc release was rumoured to be the only director’s cut release of this film currently on home video. The forthcoming UK DVD from Hong Kong Legends will be the supposed director’s 117 minute cut. The HK DVD (Media Asia) is 125:45 NTSC, which matches the UK VHS (Made in Hong Kong).

 

The Burning (1981)

Comments	Footage shown in Scream Greats Vol 1 (Tom Savini) has glimpses of gore that are not in the Australian tape. [Heath G.]    "The Australian cassette released by Thorn EMI is virtually uncut, and has been sourced from the uncut version of the film. Believe it or not, the total difference in running time between the uncut and slightly edited version is a slight 16 seconds! The EMI tape is actually the slightly modified UK video version, and was never passed fully uncut locally. MGM have hinted that they may be releasing the film on DVD in an uncut form sometime in the near future for R1. Vipco in the UK have just recently had the film passed completely uncut for video and DVD release, with all prior cuts restored." [M. C. Thomason]
