| Director | Paul W.S. Anderson |
| Cut Formats | Film, DVD |
| Classifications | M (20/8/2004 - 101 mins film) |
| Comments | While the director has said that some of the on-screen deaths were cut
because the special effects had not been completed on time, other deaths and bloodier moments
were trimmed to get the PG-13 rating. As many people have pointed out, the movie is a sequel of
sorts to six other US R-rated movies (MA and R in Australia).
The first Australian DVD contains the theatrical version, while the extended version DVD only contains an added opening scene – no gore has been restored. The third version, with 7:53 NTSC worth of restored narrative and gore, has not been released on DVD locally yet. Then again, with a duration of 108:40 1080p, the local Blu-ray disc matches the other fully restored releases. |
| Cut Footage | The following shot list is a summary of potentially censored scenes
shown on Movie-Censorship.
View this web page for more details and actual screen shots.
Note that some of these shots may not have been cut to appease the MPAA – they could be just arbitrary extensions.
(a) At 34:13 there is slightly more blood letting as well as an additional shot of the predator's claw. (b) At 34:27 there is also slightly more blood letting when the second mercenary is killed. (c) At 41:05 more spilled blood is shown on some rocks. (d) At 49:10 the death of Rousseau is bloodier. (e) At 58:56 the death of Maxwell is bloodier. The shot of a lance that impales him shows more blood covering it. (f) At 64:40 the death of Weyland is more graphic. (g) At 79:53 the disembowelling of the alien is bloodier. |
| Reason | Cut to obtain a US PG-13 rating. |
| Uncut Releases | Local Blu-ray (Fox), unrated US DVD and Blu-ray (Fox), European Blu-ray. |
| More Details | This review talks about how this and other films by Anderson came off second best at the hands of studio-sanctioned censorship. |

| Comments | The usual story. Our cinema print was the shorter US theatrical version,
rated by the MPAA with an R. More than likely, the rounded Aussie theatrical running time should match the UK film print duration,
which clocks in at 93:37 film. This comes close to the R-rated US DVD time of 93:41 NTSC,
or the equivalent of 93:35 film and 89:51 PAL. The UK DVD (Fox) runs to 96:53 PAL, but they also
classified a shorter 89:52 PAL version, and have also received the theatrical version only
on Blu-ray, with a running time of 93:49 1080p. The US Blu-ray is uncut and runs to 101:05 1080p.
In Australia, the only DVD available is the "uncut" release, although I don't have a running time
for this disc yet. One hopes that the local Blu-ray will not be the censorsed version, as
it was for Die Hard 4.0.
As with many recent horror films, the case for MPAA censorship is not conclusive. That said, the quantity of restored gore footage lends support to the conclusion that the film was toned down to secure an R rating for its theatrical engagement. I have yet to view the local DVD to check the audio commentary and bonus features for clues. |

(a) At 00:59 there is a more lingering shot of a chestburster emerging from a corpse. (b) At 01:49 the chestburster continues to crawl from its host. (c) At 15:07 a close-up of a chestburster emerging from the boy's front is restored. (d) At 50:10 there is a bloodier death for the teenager. (e) At 51:54 some off-screen head chewing has been restored. (f) At 57:27 addition gore shows an open stomach of one victim with chestbursters inside it. (g) At 63:37 an extra shot of someone's head hitting a windshield has been restored. (h) At 66:52 one additional shot of a nurse being strangled is apparent. (i) At 82:39 a victim is shown with half a body, rather than remaining in one piece. |

| Comments | Our DVD (Force) is reportedly cut. The anamorphic US DVD (MGM) runs to 104:23 NTSC and is rated R on the case. It shows the father stumbling backwards after being shot in the stomach, but it does not show the act of being shot, nor does it show his head being blown off. MGM US have a good track record of sourcing DVD transfers from uncut print elements (The Brood, Squirm) but not this time, it seems. Note that DVD Compare says the US DVD is uncut (meaning the original theatrical version), so I'm guessing the missing head shot is either an MPAA imposition, or it appears in a non-US assembley of the film, for instance a European version. |
